Another fine performance from NLCC resulted in a deserved victory away to Calverley. Ably captained by Joe Gordon, NLCC won the toss and elected to field. To a man (and woman!) NLCC bowled and fielded superbly – proven by the fact that Calverley were not able to run more than a single off any ball. This, combined with the single Calverley wicket taken (the result of a fiendish throw in from Ziad combined with a slight deflection onto the stumps by Charlie) contained Calverley to 249. Such was the quality of NLCC’s fielding that Calverley’s coach remarked on this several times and described it as the best fielding he had seen by an U9’s team. As for the bowling, 7 of NLCC’s overs produced only a single run for Calverley.

With the bat, Leeds were keen to pass the 50 needed to win as quickly as possible and this produced some swift running between the wickets and although there were a few close calls for run outs, in the main (although not every time!) NLCC were able to stay in. Particular points to mention are: the excellent communication between Joe and Tom at the crease; the almost unstoppable scoring combination of Bella and Charlie – 27 runs between them, with Charlie being NLCC’s overall top scorer with 17; Sam and Orlan’s excellent work in protecting their wicket - including some deft touches to steer the ball away from the field by Sam; and Ziad and Alfie’s confident play with the bat which would have resulted in a substantially higher margin of victory for NLCC had it not been for some excellent work in the field by Calverley.
