Leeds brought back down to Earth as Guiseley inflict first defeat of the season

North Leeds made the nightmare journey to Guiseley, never thought I would ever say that as the route is normally straight forward enough, however the big difference being it was Triathlon Weekend. It took the majority of the players over an hour to reach the ground.

The centre wicket had been selected for the game today as Skipper H.Ahmad won the toss, he could only bat first as three of his players were yet to reach the ground fifth-teen minutes before the scheduled start of play. J.Heath and B.Cawood opened the batting for Leeds. With the score on 7, D.Hoos got the home side the early breakthrough. John slashed at a wide one which caught the toe end of the blade; M.Atkinson stood up to the stumps took a superb grab to his right remove the in-form batsmen for no score. J.Mason walked in at three as light rain had begun to fall. Together with Ben, they patiently began to form a partnership, stroking some beautiful strokes to the fence in the process. The rain begun to get heavier as the score reached 41.M.Hamilton then bagged Guiseley their second wicket as Jack was dismissed for 10.He stuck a sweet cover drive straight to the skipper G.Cooper at short extra cover, it was a smart grab low down. At this point the players rushed off and the covers were brought on. The time allotment for rain was used up; it meant loss of overs if anymore was to fall as the players made their way back to the middle. Ben was dismissed a few minutes after the restart for 20. M.Hamilton pitched one on a full length, he got forward as you would normally do, the ball then rolled underneath his bat to hit middle peg. A classic pea-roller Trevor Chappell of Australia would have been proud of. Cast your minds to that famous video of the under-arm incident between Australia and New Zealand in 1981.C.Sutton was the next in and had a short stay at the wicket. He was dismissed on 1 by a jaffar from B.Hallas, bowling left arm over it nipped away from the edge to knock back off stump. S.Hull came in at 6 for Leeds, having not played for nearly a year. He was unable to trouble the scorers as J.Kelly sent his off pole out the ground with some movement in the air, the score now 44-5 and Leeds looking down the barrel.
W.Arshad played some nice drives down the ground to the fence, clearly getting set as he looked to try getting Leeds out of a hole.17 runs had been added before the Skipper H.Ahmad was dismissed for 4 as B.Hallas claimed his second. His full pitched ball produced an inside edge which went back onto the stumps. At 61-6 U.Mir walked in, he left any balls off the stumps well alone and the score was 62 at the halfway stage. The lower order had a monumental task at hand to try flip proceedings around. Waqar after drinks decided to tee off in a sensible manner, waiting for the right ball in his zone as he slammed 2 maximums over midwicket towards the clubhouse and car park to move into the 20’s.The second of which nearly took out Alex Wilson’s car in the process.

A reverse sweep by Umar was also attempted off a ball which pitched very wide outside the off stump, one he has nearly mastered in the nets but no to no avail on this occasion. The score soon ticked into the 80’s and it was now a case of working up to little milestones bit by bit. The stand however unfortunately ended with the score on 88. Umar top edged one as he looked to work it into the leg-side. It was safely pouched by C.Hayes at midwicket as J.Kelly bagged his second. R.Dutt was next in and went for an expansive drive first ball, losing his middle stump in the process. C.Hayes got into the act to remove the set man Waqar a short time later via some loss in concentration, going back to a flighted full ball to be trapped on the crease leg before wicket. It ended a fine compiled innings of 34 in a fighting cause. A. Mohammed was the last man to be dismissed for 2 as the ball clipped his leg stump, J.Kelly bagged a 4-four and Leeds had been bowled out for 91.

After the restart Leeds desperately required early inroads to have a chance, J.Fisher and S.Dixon opened up for the home side. It was Fisher who was the aggressor as he drove and cut anything loose to the rope. S.Dixon was happy to nudge it around to get in. H.Ahmad got Leeds the breakthrough with the score on 17; S.Dixon on 6 drove one in the air to mid-on where S.Hull got low down to complete the catch. C.Hayes was next in and cashed in off anything with some width. Z.Khan bowled well but was unable to gain a wicket for his efforts in his 5 over spell. The Leeds skipper was unlucky not to have C.Hayes and J.Fisher out leg before wicket as a few close lbw shouts were turned down. S.Hull was introduced into the attack and was stiff to begin with, as he looked to find some form back with the ball. He produced a few lifters off the deck which hurried the batsmen up a touch. A. Mohammed came into the attack after the skipper finished his 8 over stint and produced a wicket off his first ball back after a year.

His left arm over angle produced a top edge by J.Fisher after attempted booming coving drive over the top of extra cover. It went high in the sky where B.Cawood came round from cover to complete a solid catch, the score now 77-2.C.Hayes was nearly out the very next ball as his attempted pull off a shortish delivery got a touch big on him and went just wide of square leg. J.Fewster was greeted with some friendly short pitched bumpers by C.Sutton. Definitely not the type of bowling you want to face first up, they were evaded well though. C.Hayes finished the game off with a drive through extra cover to the score box to seal a comfortable win for the home team by 8 wickets in 19 overs, he finished 41* and J.Fewster 2*

So a first defeat of the season for the 3XI.I have to say, they didn’t play badly at all and were just beaten by a Guiseley side that played better on the day. Moving onwards, Cup game is next up for them at Burley where a win would book them a spot in the semis.
